I'd just like to mention that the Israeli kibbutzim were a heavily
subsidized sector of the population.  They were never self-supporting by
any stretch of the imagination - so what the FEC is doing is, in fact,
very different from the Israeli model.  
(This isn't to say that governments shouldn't support worthy enterprises. 
 One needs to look at it, however, in the larger context of: Why it's done
 (or should be); who benefits and who loses, etc.)
