Before the recent disruption of cohousing-L, the topic of Community Land Trusts (CLTs) was being discussed. I asked them (in part): The main question is: 'Could a CLT be used for part or all of a 30 unit new construction cohousing community?' I got this response: -- forwarded message -- From: Jeff Washburne <jeff.prg [at] mtn.org> If I remember correctly, one of the major CLT obstacles with cohousing was the relative loss of control as to assigning who would be able to buy into the home. That stated, I know that the CLT in Madison WI has been working on a cohousing development that incorporates cohousing, Conservation Land Trusts and Community Land Trust model. The ICECLT website was posted, but I would also recommend to the group that they take a look at the following site for Burlington Associates http://www.burlingtonassociates.com/ Burlington Associates are 7 partners who are experts on the CLT model as well as it's ability to work with other types of housing models. One of the Associates, Michael Brown, has been an incredible help and instrumental in getting our CLT going. The post by Rob Sandelin of South Snohmosh County references the challenges in obtaining building financing for CLTs. I haven't heard that this is a great concern here in the Twin Cities or even nationally. Again, I would recommend talking with one of the Burlington Associate partners. I would be happy to see if Michael would be willing to sit down with us at some time as well to discuss into the future.
