Cohousing-L Mailing List: Roberts Creek Cohousing milestone.

Roberts Creek Cohousing is about to enter it's 5th year of development and
this past week we have been rewarded with the gift of having our subdivision
approved by all regulatory bodies.

Ours is a rural (first rural cohousing in Canada) development of 31 homes on
20 acres and has experienced many unique challenges as rezoning was required
(first rural Cohousing zoning designation in Canada). In some ways the
lengthiness of the process has worked in our favour as it has provided ample
opportunity for us to establish relationships with the surrounding community
and local officialdom. Flexibility and transparency are the operative words
in our experience, not to mention an awareness of which fights to pursue.

As we approach the holiday season our site services are all in and we have
begun home construction, we are fully subscribed and are blessed with a
healthy waiting list. I'm sure that all of you who have traversed the stormy
waters of development appreciate the frothy mix of joy, heartbreak, anger
and excitement that accompany the realization of a vision such as  ours. It
bears repeating that seeing a cohousing process through gestation is one of
the most amazing experiences that one can have. And to have the realization
that there are so many of us around the world doing this wonderful work is
indeed balm for the soul.

Happy holidays to you all.  We would like to express our appreciation to
Fred Olson who manages this invaluable list and to those  many folks out
there willing to express their feelings, pass on their wisdom and regale us
with stories of living in community.
