Community buildings, the commonhouse in cohousing parlance, create a place to bring people together on community terms. When you gather in someones private house, there is an overlay of privateness to the space, while a commons is co-owned both financially and socially. If I could build a community such as been mentioned, I would have a group co-build the community center first, before any private homes. This way, you would know the attributes of the common space when you designed and built your own space.
