We have carports, not garages. We had originally planned on garages, but cut them to come in at budget during construction. Since it's northern california the worst we face is heavy rain in the winter so the weather protection is adequate. They are perfectly fine; they are clustered in one quadrant of the property, which seems an ideal placement for us. One carport is the community workspace, but it isn't completely enclosed. Their location in the one quadrant means that it is a walk, on stairs, for 5 of our 14 households. So far that's ok but it might not be ok later--"aging in place" will be hard if mobility is impaired for any of those residents. Something I didn't anticipate is that some community members store many many items besides their cars in the car ports. This is source of conflict in the community. If we had garages, we could close the doors on some members' tendencies to accumulate. Also, it surprises me how this issue, small in comparison to issues of world peace, and hunger and poverty, gets under my skin. Who knew? Casey M.
