Consider going paint-free/stain-free. You can use raw wood siding or fiber-cement siding, either of which will go decades without needing replacement. Some stains are pretty toxic, and the labor of repainting is expensive. Most homes in our 2nd neighborhood used unpainted hemlock siding. Once you decide to stain, you pretty much get locked into the maintenance cycle.
