Personally, I don't like the "spontaneous volunteers" idea because I'm 
one of those people who feels guilty if others are working and I'm not 
so I feel better if I know when it is NOT my turn, which means others 
need to know when it IS their turn.

We did an exercise at one of our group sessions where people blew up 
pink balloons and bounced them in the air. What was very interesting to 
me was that only a few people even noticed that some balloons had 
fallen on the floor and picked them up again. So of 15 people bouncing 
balloons only 3 or so ever picked up. Being one of those three, I avoid 
situations where people are expected to 'spontaneously volunteer' 
although it is always nice to be allowed to help when I can or it is 
needed.
