Are you kidding. Cohousing is highly screened. The screening however is done by the banks. If your members can not qualify for a mortgage, either by financials or by lack of job security, they are not allowed in unless some miracle intervention happens. This is a common problem in start up groups. It is almost always considerably more expensive to create the project than the originators expected. Thus there is a whole lot of turn over once the real prices become known. Often this is fairly late in the process. I know, it's a shock for those of us who have been living in other kinds of intentional communities for many years! Cohousing groups will take action if someone really objectionable tries to join, but generally they rely on self-selection for recruitment. And ya know what? Things generally seem to turn out well. Perhaps screening is more necessary if a community lives more closely together and doesn't have individual ownership of units, or perhaps the rest of the movement has something to learn from cohousing on this topic. :-) Cheers, --Tree ----------------------------------------------- Tree Bressen 1680 Walnut St. Eugene, OR 97403 (541) 484-1156 tree [at] ic.org http://www.treegroup.info _________________________________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list -- Unsubscribe, archives and other info at: http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-L/ --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
