My friend Beaverchief from the Lummi Tribe in Washington State used to say that when a person moves to the area (Seattle etc.) it takes them 15 years to understand the place. They will first chop down the trees in order to be comfortable. In five years they will begin to feel that something is missing. In 15 they will plant trees. One of our members at Oak Creek Commons on the Central Coast of California was raised in Wisconsin and originally thought that our area was too dry looking and too much like a desert (our average rainfall is about 13 inches). After living here she began to appreciate the looks of our natural landscapes and no longer thinks of it as too dry and looking like a desert. People sometimes take their biases with them and judge their new surroundings in terms of what they were used to. If you came from a cluttered yard, you appreciate clutter. If you came from a clean or sculptured yard, you hate clutter. Each has its advantages. If you interact with your neighbors, you begin to think in terms of what makes them happy, and along the way appreciate their point of view. Esthetics then begins to fade in importance and you can evolve into a feeling of "I can live with that". You can bet that once all the offending bits are cut off and there is a little rest someone will find something else that offends them and the whole process will start all over again till every thing is "beige". Rather than me deal with my attachments to likes and dislikes I want you to not present me with things I dislike. (I wont complain if I like it). I have seen more than one vibrant alive group become sterile over trying to address everyone's like and dislikes. I think architectural review policies should only concern themselves with property values and safety, past that it is "Viva la difference".
