One of the hardest things about our modular housing experience is that we allowed nearly-infinite variations in each unit, which -- despite assurances to the contrary from the modular housing folks -- was a nightmare for the on-site
construction team to manage.

This should be done in neon and sit flashing on the floor in the middle of every new cohousing group's meetings. To rent the sign, the Cohousing Association could charge 10% of the costs it saves each new community and the community would still be ahead.

The designers like opportunities to customize and promise the moon with no extra cost.

It's the workers on the ground who get stuck with figuring it out when it doesn't work. The construction delays are just enormous and increase costs for EVERYONE.

Before you ask for even one little modification, figure the cost of that modification will be paid many times over by everyone else in the project. Your $100 door substitution will cost the project at least $1000. Multiply that by each change and you see why custom housing is so expensive.
