At Pleasant Hill Cohousing (Chuck Durrett, architect), the middle units
have lots of light. In addition to skylights in each unit and high
ceilings, Chuck designed an opening between the first and second floors
near the staircase and right under the skylight. That lets light flow down
to the first floor.
An added bonus of middle units, especially here where we have lots of passive heating and cooling features designed in, is that they tend to stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter than the end units.
