Kim--Westwood in Asheville, NC has a central system for both heat (radiant
floors) and domestic hot water, powered by solar and natural gas. This
system works beautifully and uses much less fuel (and space, and other
resources) than individual heat systems in each building would have. The BTU
depends on so many factors (climate, heat load, # of units, tightness of the
buildings, total square footage, etc.) that there is no simple direct
transfer of information from one project to another. The designer and
contractor for our central systems was Bill Fleming at Shelter Technology,
Inc.: BillF [at] sheltertech.com.  He says he is open to consultations with
architects and engineers.

Are there any completed cohousing communities that have individual units 
with A central heating system/plant for all units? If so, what is the BTU
rating 
on your heat plant? And is it for just heat or heat and hot water? Thanks!
