I strongly suggest sitting in rooms with the different  heights-and also 
notice what else makes a difference (windows etc) to see how  they feel to you.
 
I am much more comfortable in my rooms with 9 ft ceilings than  I am in 
others with 8ft ceilings.  Maybe floor to ceilings window--or  french doors 
would 
make a difference.    Louise
