Dear all, My name is Benjamin Siew, from University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. I am currently a final year student in Industrial Design researching into the design of common house kitchen in cohousing community. I have subscribed to the Cohousing-L email list a few days back and I have been reading previous posting about kitchen design. My purpose of this e-mail is to have a sensing in your thoughts if there is a kitchen specially designed for the common kitchen. The specially designed kitchen will include features like: 1. Furniture design to look like a domestic kitchen, with workflow efficiency and methods of preparation of ingredients comparable to commercialized kitchen. 2. Efficiency of the stove comparable to commercialized kitchen but safety concerns due to the presence of children in the kitchen. 3. Modularity in furniture that minimizes motion of transporting of heavy prepared food into the dining area. (e.g. a workbench that has wheels attached to the bottom slides out from the main furniture and transport the prepared food to the dining area) 4. Application of new technologies: a. A new energy renewable technique that convert heat into electricity. b. Glass/ surface that cleans itself under exposure of UV lights that minimizes used of harmful solvents and water. I would also hope to hear from residents on their current problem faced in their common house kitchen. This will allow me to put all those problems into my design consideration and ultimately, creating a kitchen that will be more user-friendly and desirable to everyone. Cheers, Benjamin UNSW, Sydney
