Michael:

There is such a thing as a heat exchanger. This device is a good one to have designed into your forced-air heating system when you are building your house. It is kind of bulky and not easily squeezed into an already built house.

Before air-tight houses were being built, there was often enough leakage around windows, pipe holes, and electrical outlets to provide considerable fresh air. There was also considerable heat loss. So now, modern design has made new houses more heat efficient, but has generally sacrificed ventilation.

I am very sensitive to indoor pollution and have done considerable research on the problem. John Bower has written two interesting books, "Understanding Ventilation", and "Healthy House Building for the Modern Millennium", both of which thoroughly explain the principles of establishing healthful indoor air in homes.

People who live in cold climates can benefit by reading these books.
