Hello everyone, Here's to all of you that are interested. Enjoy! <snip>On Monday, October 30th, 7:30PM-8:30PM (PT) on City Visions Radio 91.7 FM KALW San Francisco:
A Place to Call Home: How is the Bay Area Facing the Housing Challenge? When it comes to finding a place to live in the Bay Area, cost is the main concern. In one of the most expensive markets in the country, affordability continues to be a challenge despite predictions of a much-anticipated deceleration of housing prices.
Yet cost is not the only issue on the minds of those who call the Bay Area home. Some, regardless of their means, are placing equal weight on creating a sense of community where they live. Trying to combat the social isolation and alienation that can be prevalent in modern day American living, some people have been reinventing ways of living together that were once only the stuff of hippie lore. With an eye towards developing living spaces that are eco-friendly as well as just plain friendly, people, including a growing number of retiring baby boomers, are building intentional communities designed to be more enriching, supportive, and sustainable than more traditional set ups.
To understand how these communities work, we’ll take a look at two models: co-housing and cooperative living. Still worried about cost? We’ll also take a look at land trusts as a way to make home ownership possible for those with low to moderate income. And finally for you renters out there, we’ll explore whether home ownership should even be everyone’s housing goal.
