David,
I was planning on having one of those in my new house, but an Occupational Therapist friend suggested that we look at a personal elevator or lift as the costs are about the same, there are safety issues as it is possible to all out of the chair, so it is best if someone walks alongside of the user, and the stairs have to be built wider to accommodate the person alongside.

The chair lift will only transport a person, so someone has to carry the wheelchair or handicapped scooter (that is back breaking) from floor to floor.

All in all, the lift is a better idea.

Hello,

Another thought: For decades I have seen advertisements of "chair stair climbers". These are foldable chairs that sit on a rail by the side of a flight of stairs. A user brings the chair to the top or bottom of the stairs, unfolds it, sits down, and rides up or down to the other end of the stairs. This presumably costs a lot less than $19K, and additionally the staircase remains usable in its normal capacity.

There are several elevators out there made for more home-use that don't
require a shaft, per se, at all. Or that can use a converted closet space as
the "shaft" for it, and would need a ground pit or mechanical room. Some can
be housed in the middle of a staircase surround. Since it is for a common
house, which would get much less use than say, a commercial bldg or apt
bldg, a light use elevator made for home use might be a better fit in this
instance.

Check the links I sent in a previous response to this subject.
