Hi-At Eno Commons, we resolved this by having half the homes with kitchens and dining rooms facing the pedway and half with living rooms facing the pedway. So, folks could pick the pattern that suited them.
At Eastern Village, there are many more kinds of units, but all the ones facing the courtyard have their living room windows facing the common space and the dining and kitchen spaces further back. Ann Zabaldo raised the question of having kitchens facing the common space, but the EVC group didn't want to give up having big living room windows, which was the necessary design tradeoff. At EVC, there are quite a few units that have no windows into common space at all. So, we all meet at the mailboxes and in the laundry room.
