Hi, At Jackson Place Coho in Seattle we're very urban. We lock everything 24/7. When we first moved in there were many attempts to break into the CH - only one of which succeeded - and lots of damage to our doors and locks. We gradually increased the quality of the locks on the doors at great expense. With 20/20 hindsight we should have just coughed up the bucks for top of the line locks in the first place. We activate our phone tree if keys get stolen (rare) or a garage clicker gets lost or stolen (so we can change the code). We ask people to not leave their clicker in their car. We have hooks at 2 levels in the CH hall for coats but they only hold about 10-15 coats each. For large events we move in a freestanding rack that will hold 30+ coats. No mudroom (urban) but mats at all the doors and linoleum tile, not carpet, in the halls and dining room. Congrats on move-in, Anne Little -----Original Message----- From: maryvk [at] tellink.net [mailto:maryvk [at] tellink.net] Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2009 6:42 AM To: cohousing-l [at] cohousing.org Subject: [C-L]_ Reality Questions for our new Common House! We are moving into our Common House within the months. Yippee! Here are a few questions for experienced cohousing dwellers. Might as well start with lessons learned. Do you lock your Common House? If so, describe the circumstances. We are in a very rural, almost no crime area but some of our new neighbors and guests are city dwellers. How do you hang coats and store wet and muddy boots? We need to accommodate 50-70 people. We have a great mudroom foyer but decided not to develop built in's etc. until the construction company left the premise. We'd love to do hooks especially for children but how can you do so many???? And mats for boots are great but again it seems like it would end up a pile? Thank you for your ongoing support. We encourage you to visit us when you are in New England.
