Hello Jennifer,Jamaica Plain Cohousing has three units that are affordable in the formal-program sense as well as an affordability fund that has assisted five other households to buy market-rate units. Jamaica Plain itself is a neighborhood of Boston and definitely is urban.
JP Cohousing, Cornerstone Village, and Cambridge Cohousing comprise the urban-area Boston cohousing communities. As you can see, a majority of households in our communities have bought market-rate households with no assistance, but a significant minority either have a formal-affordable unit or have had community assistance in buying a market-rate unit (probably some of the unassisted households have obtained informal assistance from family or friends).

Jennifer, I don't know how urban you think Amherst is. When we were first looking into cohousing we visited Pomeroy Lane Cooperative, a 25 unit limited equity, mixed income cooperative in Amherst with 4 units set aside for persons with cognitive disabilities. It's not cohousing, but it has some common facilities. You can find them via Google. The cohousing developments in Cambridge (Cornerstone Village and Cambridge Cohousing) and Boston (Jamaica Plain Cohousing) have affordable units, but they are not cooperatives. -- Mabel :-) Mabel Liang mabel [at] twomeeps.com Software Engineer turned Gardener Cornerstone Village Cohousing Cambridge, MA ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: [C-L]_ Urban Affordable Cooperative Cohousing Developments From: "Jennifer" <jms1970us [at] yahoo.com> Date: Thu, February 5, 2009 7:08 pm To: Cohousing-L [at] cohousing.org --------------------------------------------------------------------------Hello, I???m a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, and I???m completing my degree in regional planning. My master???s thesis research is on urban affordable cooperative cohousing developments. I am looking for information about urban affordable cohousing andcooperative/cohousinghybrid developments possibly in the New England or New York metro areas. Right now, I know of Sawyer Hill Cohousing in Berlin, MA, which has affordable units in their development, but it isn't in an urbancommunity, and I know about Greenway Park Cohousing in Chicago, which has affordable units in an urban area, but isn???t in the New England or New York metro> area. Any information about cohousing developments that fit at least twoof the above requirements would be helpful. Thanks so much for your help, Jennifer Siciliano _________________________________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list -- Unsubscribe, archives and other info at: http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-L/_________________________________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list -- Unsubscribe, archives and other info at: http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-L/
