Another historic design with many traits comparable to cohousing can be visited 
in Amsterdam; the 'begijnhof' (see picture in 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begijnhof,_Amsterdam ).

Many more examples can be seen in Leiden in the Netherlands. Very desirable 
places to live; beautifully quiet yet in the middle of the city. The only thing 
missing is the common house!
