Today, thanks to the increased rate of technological advancement starting during the industrial revolution, the cost to build a shelter from the elements is lower now than at any other time in recorded history. Today, a family could buy a used travel trailer for a few thousand dollars, and park it in a friend's suburban backyard for perhaps nothing. I repeat, the cost of shelter -- shelter with running hot water and flush toilets no less -- shelter that you own without debt and can move with you to where jobs are available -- now costs less than a couple months' work. Houses are more in reach financially, for more people, than they ever have been. If low and moderate income folks are having trouble affording a house, the problem is NOT the cost of building it.
