Our community is a younger one (5 years old) and we did all our communications during our formation via email/group mailing lists. I think this caused a strong "selection pressure" and we do all our communications via email... This is a norm/value for the community that is now generally unquestioned. We use the lists for announcements, agendas, notices, reminders, requests, etc.... It is quite standard for these communications. We do have discussions online periodically about whether some discussions are better suited to face to face discussions rather then via email. It seems to work for us!
