CoHo:

I am not suggesting that "law-free," but socially-bound communities are perfect, where everyone's expectations are always met. I am suggesting that rule-binding has a way of creating rather than resolving potential and actual conflict, and that an atmosphere of mutualism and resolution in response to the merits of individual cases is an easier, more effective way of increasing social bonds rather than binding a community with rules.

This is not to say that "slackers" don't exist, but it is to say that resistance to rules is easier for a slacker than breaking social bonds. I question whether posted rules are a more effective way to get contributions than unwritten social obligations.

In reality, we all live in a combination of laws and social mores, so the "practical" question is "What kind of balance do we find most agreeable?" Which will trend toward more community spirit and less toward crime and punishment?

WT

PS: I have lived in communities where cooperation was prevalent and voluntary. Socially "challenged" people soon got the idea, through feedback or its lack, how they were "fitting in." Sociopaths got ostracism, a good thrashing, or the long arm of the law, in roughly that ascending order. Most folks just "got along." "The perfect is the enemy of the good" might be an oversimplified aphorism, but it also might be worth mulling over.

Let me know where you live. I want to move THERE.

In our law free situation NOTHING gets done. "Occasional person not pulling their weight." How about the occasional persons who are pulling their weight and now are totally disillusioned by cohousing.

Coho:

In the alternative, what about lightening up and just asking the occasional person who is not pulling his or her weight how life is going for them? Most
people in law-free situations tend to more, rather than less, and the
exceptions often have a reason, like health for example, that they don't
want to talk about, but will if you try getting close to them first, you
might find that you have increased the community bond rather than bonded the
community.

Subject: [C-L]_ Common House Use Proposal

I would like to know what cohousers think of the following common house
use proposal:

1. Nonresident owners can reserve common house only if they have

participated in a work day within previous 6 months or have done

4+ hours of work for the community in past 6 months. They are encouraged
to

make a $ donation to cohousing for use of the common house too.
Nonresident

owners will be scheduled at a lower priority than resident's events.

2. Coho residents can reserve common house only if they have participated
in

a work day within previous 6 months or have done 4+ hours of

work for the community in past 6 months.

3. No commercial events, meaning the primary purpose of the event is
selling

something.

4. Lessons or classes are OK if the student (or at least 1 student in a

group class) is a coho resident and the lesson/ class is held in c.h. for

student's convenience.

5. Spontaneous events by residents are encouraged and there is no formal

process for them.

6. Only those on a cook team who regularly cook can sign up for meals.

7. All events will leave c.h. at least as clean as they found it including

doing all laundry, putting away all clean laundry and dishes, and mopping

floors.

Thank you very much for your thoughts about the above common house use
proposal,

John Goldberg
