Zev and Sharon,

I agree with both of you.  But perhaps it is our frustration as a society that 
leads us to concentrate on relatively trivial issues, like pets, instead of the 
larger concerns that Zev mentions.  Call it a kind of "displacement:"  we shift 
the emotional valence to the mundane in order to avoid attention to questions 
that often seem to have no solution.  America is a deeply frustrated culture; 
we are constantly looking for screens onto which to project our anxieties.  We 
can then pretend that the problem is "out there" instead of within, and this 
gives us license to engage in all kinds of petty nonsense, from inexplicable 
adventures overseas to mind-numbing debates over Obama's birth certificate. 

Cohousing, to me, is what's real:  it's about sustaining ourselves 
environmenally and socially.  It is the profound seriousness of cohousing that 
I find most attractive.
