Assuming your decision is to burn wood, have you also considered a
wood-burning stove? They are much more energy-efficient, and could
lower the heating bill while burning fewer logs and possibly
releasing less smoke into the air. Opening the stove door for brief
periods may restore part of any lost ambience (although lessening the
advantages mentioned).
