Kind of off topic, but I find that when I tell people about cohousing, this
is their response too. I explain how it provides both private and public
space, but people's brains immediately flip the cult/commune switch and
can't comprehend that it's not that different from having your own
home/condo.
That said, I'm afraid cohousing has kind of brought that on itself by going
with "cohousing" as a moniker. The term immediately conjures up images of
people living communally together in a house. If it were called something
else (I don't know what...I'll have to think up some terms), I think it
would be easier to sell the idea to socially cautious Americans.
