Dear Sharon,

What a beautiful exploration of nuance. As someone who works damned hard every day as a full-time parent, I am continually amazed at people's perception that I "don't work." There is healing in your reminder to reconsider just how we refer to people and their situations.

Another beautiful teaching on this topic came up for me last year. A fabulous group of people came together over the last several years to form an interfaith rotating winter shelter in my town, providing meals and beds in our coldest months. We were encouraged to think of and refer to the folks we were serving as "dealing with homelessness," not "homeless people." What a difference that made.

In community,
Seanain
