We have common washers that use about half the water of your typical washing machine, and the washers and dryers save about 1/3 on electricity. Only one of our households had a particularly efficient washer prior to move in. Two of our units have washer/dryer hookups, and 11 use the common laundry. Our units did not have the hook-ups so people had to pay to install their own. One household actually has the hookups but doesn't use them. I personally am glad to have the extra space. I think many people who have had a washer in their home overestimate the time/potential hassle of using a common laundry. And it can be fun to chat with the occasional common house passer by as you fold your laundry. Randa Johnson New Brighton Cohousing Aptos, CA
