People who take care of households and children have different travel patterns than workers who travel to and from an office each day. The fact that most of these people are women is coincidental. If you only observe that "different genders use public transportation and public spaces differently" you are not seeing the real picture here.
Simple statements like "women use pubic transportation far more than men" are not reflective of the full picture. Hearing that, some might suggest that this is simply because they are women which would be a incorrect conclusion from the info presented in the article.
