Regine here from Nevada City co housing. My partner Peter says to take off the supers in the winter. He was an apple farmer.

We have 3 hives here in Roberts Creek Cohousing. This was a recent
initiative of a member, supported by the community. He installed them and cares for them and reaps the honey. They are near our garden and help with
fertilization. And we all are given a small jar of honey as well upon
request. Great idea! Alison Etter - Roberts Creek Cohousing, BC

At Shadowlake Village at present we have 8 hives (and 3 beekeepers)
and are
approaching our third winter with bees. Before starting, with two bee
keepers and three hives in 2011, some of us were dismayed to face
significant opposition from a few concerned community members.
However this
was peacefully resolved, and since then everyone has come to
appreciate, or
at least tolerate, our tiny furry workers as they go about their
business.
And the "very local" honey seems to be hugely appreciated.
