RoseWind Cohousing, Port Townsend WA. When we designed the Common House many years ago, we imagined that folks would "hang out" there. In fact, uses tend to be primarily for meals, meetings (montlhy plenary, various commitees), and events (personal socials, sponsored events like music rehearsals, potlucks, dances, by various organizations). In addition there are errands: most of our mailboxes are in the CH foyer (a good move!), so we run into each other while picking up mail, dropping off CH supplies, checking the calendar on the bulletin board, leaving something in a person's cubby for them. Periodically there are those who gather in the small room where the TV is-- teens playing games or watching programs, members watching a major sports event together. But it is very rare for anyone to just decide to spend time there reading or socializing with others. It's easier (and often warmer) to do that in our own homes.
