Garages and basements have been or could be used. You need a clear agreement 
about who owns what or rents what or what.

If there is a small house that can be purchased and used, that would be good 
too. 

One of the important things about having a common space is that it belongs to 
everyone and everyone is always welcome. You are less likely to have that when 
you meet in people’s homes. In the common house, you are all equal.
