At CoHo Ecovillage (Corvallis, Oregon, move-in 2007), we have: 8 lower flats (2, 3, and 4 bedrooms) 8 upper flats (2, 3, and 4 bedrooms) 18 townhouses (2 and 3 bedrooms) The flats are 4 to a building. The townhouses are 3 to 5 to a building. All first-floor entrances are visitable (low thresholds), so that means 26 of 34 homes can be easily accessed (plus the common house). A (mis?)interpretation of code resulted in all (not just some) lower flats being ADA compliant (lower kitchen counters, larger bathrooms, etc.). Some of these design features were seen as less desirable by some people. Our site is fairly flat. We've had 2 to 4 wheelchair folks at a time over the years. One unit is owned by a nonprofit (A Home in Community); it is designed to be available as an affordable rental to a disabled adult. The first (and current) resident was very active in the community during the development stage and his experience and input were an important factor in the design of our community. A chair lift was installed to allow easier access to a 2nd story flat when a resident's mother moved in. -- Susan Hyne www.cohoecovillage.org 7 years in development...7 years living on-site...a lifetime to share
