Hello,Adding further to what Patti has mentioned about Jamaica Plain Cohousing:
We generally decided to go for flats as against duplexes, a lot because (a) we're an urban cohousing community with 30 units on less than an acre, so we couldn't afford to lose a lot of space to internal stairwells and (b) what Patti mentioned about having our units being internally navigable and visitable (with elevators so that they are externally navigable and visitable as well).
We also went for as much insulation in the floors and walls as the architects would offer, which has taken care of a lot of potential interunit noise problems (and made for great energy efficiency as well).

We designed the community so that we could age in place. All of our units are accessible by elevator, and all of the units are wheelchair visitable and adaptable.
