To get a feel for small house design, Prairie Hill Cohousing members and
prospective members have visited about 10 small apartments and  houses of
friends over a couple of years to get ideas. Another source of small house
design ideas came from 2 field trips to Ikea, where there are a few model
small houses inside the store. They resemble small homes I have visited in
Sweden.

We have had field trips or presentations once a month for several years to
learn about a lot of things--designing natural playgrounds, and edible
landscapes, creating prairies, choosing bathroom fixtures and kitchen
cabinets, sustainable storm water magement,  for example. The longer trips,
including all-day excursios up to 200 miles, providing opportunities to
develop community among folks who have previously been strangeers.
