I’m a freelance writer who covers aging. In my book, With a Little Help from Our Friends—Creating Community as We Grow Older, I have a chapter on co-housing. In the book. There, and in freelance articles I’ve done, I’ve found a few affordable co-housing communities. One is Sand River Co-housing in Santa Fe which is intentionally affordable. It’s also for people over 55, but as a model it could work for all ages. Another co-housing model for older people is ElderSpirit in Abingdon, Va. They are intentionally mixed income, and a significant number of units are affordable rentals, rather than market rate purchase. Generally, the trade-off is you get some financing help from the government, which has strings attached that can sometimes be problematic. But definitely a path that I think more co-housing communities might pursue. I’m on vacation now, but feel free to pass these ideas along to Joshua Johnson.
