Washington Commons will be the first cohousing community in West Sacramento and one of the first urban, infill cohousing communities in the region. Seventy-five (75%!) of the homes in the community are already reserved. The future buyers, who formed the LLC to develop this community and have put up their own money to fund the pre-development costs, will host the Groundbreaking Ceremony on Friday, November 19, at 1 pm on their property at 4th & G Streets in West Sacramento. “I have been waiting for this day since I first heard about cohousing decades ago from a friend involved in Muir Commons in Davis, the first cohousing community,” says founder Anne Geraghty. The development was initiated by a group of people who sought the benefits of urban living with collaborative neighbors. They engaged a professional team with experience in developing cohousing communities, including developer UD+P from Portland (www.udplp.com<http://www.udplp.com>) (who developed the PDX Commons project there). The location just across the river from downtown Sacramento, offers residents easy access to urban amenities on both sides of the river including an ever growing network of trails. Privacy: Washington Commons will feature 35 single-level private one and two-bedroom condominiums. Each condo will include the normal amenities of a private home, kitchen, living room, bedroom(s) and bathroom(s). Connection: Washington Commons is designed to promote and support social connection. It will include a great room for gatherings and meals, guest rooms, workshops, a large terrace, and other shared spaces making it easy to gather, do projects together, and stay connected. Owner-developed: The future buyers have been active participants in the design and development process. After the project is built, owners will continue to share the responsibility for the management of the community. Sustainability: Washington Commons strives for a more socially and environmentally sustainable living environment with its small energy-efficient homes and collaborative structure making it easy for people to share resources. Walkable, bicycle-oriented location: Residents will be able to walk to many nearby destinations. Generous bicycle storage will enable members to take advantage of the growing network of bicycle lanes in West Sacramento and beyond. The development team also includes Katie McCamant of CoHousing Solutions, co-author of the book “Creating Cohousing: Building Sustainable Communities” and who has consulted dozens of cohousing developments across North America. The architects are a collaboration between Mahlum Architects and MFA Architects of Portland. Harrison Construction, of Davis, is the builder. Five Star Bank will be doing the construction loan. Cohousing communities continue to grow in popularity across the country as people seek ways to balance our needs for both privacy and community. This need became especially apparent during the pandemic when many people suddenly lost their more dispersed social lives. There are over 40 existing such communities across Northern California. The innovative project has attracted members from the Bay Area and as far away as Maryland. “We think this is perfect for people who want to live near their work and for others who are looking to downsize and live in a walkable urban location,” said Anne Geraghty, one of the community’s founding members.
