We are 20 households, 30individuals and we have 1 stackable washer and
dryer plus 2 stand alone washers and 2 stand alone dryers.  One washer and one
dryer are only for fragrance free products.  For the most part this is an
adequate number although our stackable set doesn’t work as well as the others
but fits in the space we have.  We charge a usage fee, currently 80 cents per
wash and 75 cents per dry, and use that money for utilities related to the
laundry room and a laundry reserve fund to pay for repair and/or replacement of
machines.  Our Community is 22 years old and we have replaced and repaired
multiple machines over the years, important to plan for that.  All 20
households use the shared machines although 1 household has a private set in
their unit.  We use magnetic letters on the outside of the machines to identify
whose load is in there (our units are identified by letter rather than number)
so if a load finishes and the owner isn’t there right away to remove it the
next person can remove it to a plastic bin we keep in the laundry room and mark
it with the identifying letter so they can use the machine.  We have 3 such
bins and some busy days that’s not enough.Good luck in your
planning,Love,Bonnie FergussonSwans Market CohousingOakland, CA

If your membership is reliant on shared laundry facilities, how many machines
do you have, for how many people?
Is that enough?

I’m getting info for a community that is deciding what to get.
