Elizabeth, a process committee is part of a pathway to consensus that your community will create, so you want the role of the process team to be part of that discussion. Also, at your stage in your development, you cannot make all your decisions by consensus or consent. You want to start learning about different ways to make decisions, when each should be used and when not, so you can be training yourselves in making the shift from competitive to collaborative decision making. This is the perfect time for you to be forming teams and learning to write mandates and to make clear communication requirements. And to start sharing the work. It sounds like you have a site so you are well on your way to your final group. Many of your final decisions will be made after you have your final group. But for now you want to deal with the issues at hand while learning the skills needed for a collaborative community. I am passionate about decision making that is satisfactory, creative and exciting so if you want to go into this more, you can email me at martiew319 [at] gmail.com (mailto:martiew319 [at] gmail.com). We have twenty-seven equity members and we’ll have forty when we’re complete. We hope to start building soon, but need a few more members to please the banks… All of our growth has added a lot of complexity to the work of our committees and some of us are starting to think that the addition of a few more committees may help keep our group organized and running smoothly. I understand that many communities have something called a “Process Committee” and that there is a wide variety of mandates and tasks assigned to these committees. I would be grateful if this community could share your experiences with Process Committees. If you have one, what kind of work do they undertake in your community? Do these committees answer an important need for you and your community? I appreciate any thoughts you may have to offer. With Warmth, Elizabeth Rosenau, on behalf of Compass Cohousing.
