Congratulations Patricia! I am really happy to hear how successful Cohousing ABQ has been- I can't wait to visit! As for the large home challenges, the problem is likely price, so what about considering some of those larger units as potential co-living co-ownership units? Market to "retiring solo" type crowd, or single mom crowd, or local Albuquerque young professionals who are up for co living and co-ownership, etc. Take a page from the co-living company books and get people together who might be interested in that type of co-living. Play matchmaker and provide legal and structural support for this co-ownership collaboration so they can feel secure enough to dive in together for co-ownership. What do you think? We at Greek Village Cohousing are creating a beautiful co-working space with recording studios in a second mini common house. Thus, we anticipate that one of our large homes might be occupied by young remote worker professionals in a co-living co-ownership model. For those units, we provide legal and structural support as well as clarify membership. We provide the opportunity for people to collaborate to co-own, we then have them pay upfront the entire price of a long-term lease of 100 years renewable- just like paying for the price of ownership of a traditional unit. They arrange between themselves the portion of the purchase price they will pay. The co-living owners/ long-term leasors will be treated the same way as any other equity member household-- so they will consent/object/stand aside as a household rather than individually. Some members are arguing we need to provide them all seperate votes, others point out that will put us above the number of adults that we want to make decisions easily with, and thus they argue we should force them to decide amongst themselves similar to any family or couple household. We shall see if that policy is changed over time or saves us in a co-living environment within cohousing. What do others think?
