For people who have never lived in the West it is hard to fathom how much land 
is still owned by the federal government. Much of the anti-government sentiment 
there — not just in California but including UT, CO, etc. is caused by how the 
government manages or doesn’t manage the land. 

There are several maps on this page that show Federal Lands managed by 9 
different Federal Agencies. By the color coding, some states are almost 
entirely one color or another.

That’s why we still hear news reports that sound like plots for cowboy movies.
