Here's more information about the three kinds of community conflict we explore in my life online seven-week class, "Working Effectively with Three Kinds of Community Conflict, starting Saturday, Jan 17, middays. Times: Pacific, 10am-123opm; Eastern 1pm-3:30pm. While most community conflict looks like simple interpersonal conflict, I believe two other kinds of conflict also exist. One is Structural Conflict, when communities don't realize they need agreements and policies about important community issues, first described in _Creating a Life Together._ Another is what I call "especially challenging behaviors," in which one or more people frequently and consistently behave in self-centered, entitled ways and tend to display empathy only to try to get what they want. A second version of this is appearing unconfident and frequently victimized, but underneath they feel superior to others and entitled to get what they want. I wrote about this in an article series in _Communities_ magazine. (If you'd like a link to all the articles in the series please email me at diana [at] ic.org) Each of these other two kinds also triggers interpersonal conflict as well! If you sometimes feel discouraged by community conflict, it may be because you are not only experiencing simple interpersonal conflict, but also at least one other kind of conflict underneath it, and sometimes, _both_ other kinds at once! This combination of different kinds of conflict can be very challenging for community members and community consultants to resolve, or even to recognize. In the class we'll explore practical, workable solutions successful communities hae used to resolve or contain each kind of conflict. There _are_ things we can do! In the class we’ll explore practical, workable solutions successful communities have used to resolve or contain each type of conflict. There are things we can do! Here's a link for more information and to Register: https://www.schoolofintegratedliving.org/working-effectively-with-community-conflict/ In the class we'll look at how individuals, groups of friends, and whole communities have successfully addressed each of these kinds of conflict. Each class session includes slide-show presentations, discussion, hands-on practice with effective conflict-reducing techniques, and Q&A, as well as short videos and handouts to watch and read before the session. Fee: $195 - $295 Sliding Scale. Group rate of 20% discount) for five or more people from the same community. BIPOC people receive 50% off the middle of the sliding scale. I'm doing a FREE two-hour class on this topic on Wednesday, Dec. 17 through the FIC (Foundation for Intentional Community), or you can donate an amount for the class to the FIC as well. The class will give an overview of each kind of conflict and one or two techniques to address each kind which you can take home and use right away. 10am Pacific Time, 1pm Eastern. Here's the link to register for this free FIC class: https://www.ic.org/event/three-kinds-of-conflict/ All good wishes, Diana Leafe Christian
