I am not coming here to flame you, Bill, but to un-confuse you. (Hopefully)
Co-housers, IMHO, are the kind of people who *care* about other people, 
and by extension, the environment, because that is what people live in. 
It doesn't seem at all strange to me that co-housers would have strong 
opinions about such matters. Decisions we make today will affect our 
children and our children's children. What kind of world will they 
inhabit if we kill off most of the animals with our greedy land use? How 
will they *afford* homes if we burden the country with too much debt? I 
think that the kind of people that are attracted to cohousing tend to be 
people who think about life and what it means more deeply than other 
people, and that is why you see so much issue-related discussion on the 
cohousing list.
