Lately I have had to post quite a few messages for people when the listserver thought they were coming from an address other the address the user is subscribed under. These are called "reject messages". Our listserver is configured to require posts come from subscribers to reduce the amount of "spamming" -- unauthorized, unrelated, undesired often advertising postings which are coming to in increasing numbers lately. When a message is rejected I post it with a few lines added at the beginning to clarify who the message is from even tho I'm listed in the "From:" field of the header the message. I've started to include the subscribed address after "S:" after the sending address to help explain whats happened. Sometimes I also change the Subject line to be more meaningful. I never edit the body of the message below the preamble. Several factors may account for the increased number of rejects. 1) More people have multiple accounts that they use for email. 2) Systems assign new account names (logins) sometimes. 3) People change access providers and thus get new accounts. 4) I have not gotten the "aliases file" rebuilt -- see below. 5) Systems change the way they handle mail in such a way that it affects the "From:" address in the header. For people with new addresses usually list messages will get forwarded along with mail to the old address but posting to the list is disrupted in this way... There are several ways to deal with these problems. The easiest for me is for people to unsubscribe accounts they no longer use and subscribe the accounts they do use. This applies to address changes tho you may have to ask me to unsubscribe an address that you can no longer send from. Also if reasonable post to cohousing-L only from the address they are subscribed under. There is a mechanism for allowing posts from addresses other than a subscribed address. This is done by adding the additional addresses to the "aliases" file. This a manual, somewhat awkward and time consuming to verify process that I prefer not to do too often. But if that's what is needed to fix a problem, I'll do it. If you post to the list frequently from multiple accounts, I'll add an alias for one of them (if you ask nicely :). Fred -- Fred H.
