The following letter appeared in The New York Times today, under the
heading "Nation of Strangers".
Perhaps sharing this letter with others might offer a new lens through
which to view the value of community building.
To the Editor:
It is indeed tragic that John F. Kennedy Jr. lost his life. This is
very sad news for his family and for the people who knew him. It is also
sad that millions of people who do not bother to get to know their
neighbors are caught up in mourning for someone they did not know. In
this case, the "grieving" process symbolizes a population yearning for
deeper connections yet not willing to invest the time to forge such
connections with people who are nearby.
