There's a teen space in the basement of New View (Acton MA). It was
organized by the teens, with some parents acting as reps for the New View
grownups, bringing some questions & information back to the big group as
needed. The space was reserved on our original plans for a teen room, but
not built for a while. Now it serves as an occaisonal hangout for some of
the younger teens. Every so often, one of the parents organizes a cleanup.
There has been some vandalism, but very little. It seems to be working out
in a low-intensity kind of way - not much use, but it's there and people
like that it's there.

It's always available as long as the common house is open, which is
essentially always. The teens are allowed to keep the younger kids out, as
long as they are nice about it, not teasing. The furniture is castoffs from
various households. No permanent TV allowed in the CH, so no TV in the teen
room. Usually there is a boom box down there.

Subject: [C-L]_Teen room advice request

EBCOHO just received this note, and I'm passing it along for answers from
built communities:

>To whom it may concern:

Any advice/guidance for this teen? I'm advising this person to look here
on the list for answers.

P.S. The answer from Swan's Market: A carpeted room in the CH adjacent to
the dining area was programmed for kid's usage. It mostly functions as a
toddler play area, mostly used for visiting kids (we have only 2
infants). Teens can, in theory, use it, but the group using it for weekly
morning Yoga classes has resisted introducing any furniture not easily
movable, and the parents and grandparents of toddlers using the space
don't want anything sharp or hard or tall enough to get hurt on jumping
off of. One teen has made a kind of "birdhouse" out of a small space up
above the elevator, but it requires a ladder for access and only fits
2-3. The other teen living here has chosen not to participate in the
community.
