As a canary owner, I am aware that canaries and other pet birds have been 
known to keel over with bleeding lungs (ick), just drop dead, even in the 
next room, due to Teflon fumes, especially when overheated. Teflon is 
found in many appliances (ovens, toasters, irons) that might not even 
come to your mind. 

On the other hand, it's not certain death, as I used a Teflon/Silverstone 
frying pan daily for years, not far from my canary, before I read about 
the hazards. 

Does anyone know how Calphalon is made? Is it also a chemical coating 
that can offgas, or is it a (pricey) alternative, for non-stickness?

I'm soon off to the Michigan Women's Festival, where the workers' kitchen 
cooks for 400 and uses baking parchment paper in all the casserole pans, 
which seems to make a huge difference in clean up/burning/sticking. I 
don't know where it's sold, but might be useful for common house lasagnas 
and such.
