At Swan's Market Cohousing, we do not allow smoking in any part of the common house, including the (currently-under-construction) guestroom. >We also would like to know what rules other communities have about people >smoking outside in common areas owned by the cohousing community: do any >groups have a designated place that guests or others can smoke without >leaving the cohousing property? What about guests who have smoking cravings >when it is raining? Specifically to accomodate international visitors (one household here regularly has exchange students and many guests from afar) and other guests and residents who might need to smoke, we designated the common area downstairs, outside the Common House, in front of the garden, below the deck, as legal for smoking... smoke from there is least likely to enter any other unit's open windows. We also put the community-purchased propane-fueled BBQ there (rather than more conveniently upstairs on the deck outside the CH where the walkway leads to all our units) for the same reason: one member objecting to the smell of burnt flesh (I noted an additional hazard while helping cook Common Dinner last night: after cooking salmon on the grill, and entering a vegetarian's unit, she definitely noticed the smell... on me, from all the smoke). Note that if we sent people out to the sidewalk on 10th St. or the public courtyard just outside our door on the other side, the smokers would be right under various unit windows, so this was a factor as well. One member has been known to smoke a cigar in the garden or in the public courtyard just beyond our property line and I've heard complaints about this. The poster shop below one of our units often has incense going and the door open by our access walkway during business hours; I don't mind this and haven't heard complaints from others. >Sylvie Kashdan > >Jackson Place Cohousing Hmmm, is this the group formerly known as Seattle Cohousing?
