A large pot can stay hot (and breeding bacteria) for hours in a fridge. For food safety, as well as not hurting your back, it's best to split hot food into small shallow containers before putting it in the fridge, so it will cool quickly. You want to maximize the surface-to-volume ratio -- wide shallow dishes cool faster than ones with equal diameter and height.
